These watercolours come from a group of works called Queens, in which women take ownership of their masculine (phallic) power through a variety of activities or attributes.

Vernon Lee (nee Violet Page) 1856-1935 was an art historian and writer, a feminist and lesbian, who lived mostly in Italy, dressing exclusively as a boy/man.
There is a painting of her by Sargent.

The Singing Queens (Emmylou Harris) use their voices to penetrate a man's world. The phallic microphone is their attribute.
